ENABLING THE PRACTITIONERS OF CHEMISTRY OF TODAY AND TOMORROW TO BUILD A BETTER WORLD THROUGH PROFESSIONALISM, INTEGRITY, AND COMMUNITY SERVICE
Your involvement is what makes the Detroit ACS Local Section great. We need volunteers for efforts of various proportion and length - something for everyone.

There are a number of committees that will welcome you, you don't have to be a "chair" of a committee to help out!

Career Program |
Plans and implements activities to provide members with access to career assistance, direct contact with employers, and information on employment data, trends and issues to aid in career decision making. |

Communications Committee
|
Communicate news and events with the Detroit LS community; Oversees editorial and financial policies of the section's regular newsletter, website, and/or other publications. |
|
Education |
To improve the practice and process of chemistry education in the Metropolitan Detroit Area; acts as a liaison between the ACS, college, and high school community. |
|
Environment & Safety |
Promotes safe laboratory practices through the presentation of safety symposia for teachers and students and provides advice to local officials on safety-related issues; liaison between National organization and local section to stay on top of key safety related issues that would impact laboratories in the local area. |

Flint Sub-Section Liaison |
Regional committee that coordinates activities around the Flint area |

Fundraising |
Aids in securing funding for the section, especially for unique one-off events |

Government Affairs |
Works with Government at the Federal level to promote public policies that help the chemistry enterprise serve the nation. At the local level, interacts with elected officials from counties in the section, acting as a resource on topical scientific issues and the scientific literature. |

Industrial Liaison |
Works with Industry at the local level to promote chemical industry; liaison between National organization and local section to stay on top of key industry trends and related issues that would impact laboratories and chemists in the local area. |

Kids & Chemistry |
An outreach program designed to engage students at an elementary or middle school level to discover the fun in chemistry through approved hands-on activities and chemical demonstrations. The committee organizes events in the local area. |

Long Range Planning |
Considers and proposes long-range goals and objectives and suggests programs and activities to other section committees for future realization. |

Membership |
The primary membership promotion tool of the Section for new membership, member retention, and membership needs. |
|
Midgley Award |
The Thomas Midgley Award established in 1965 in part from a grant from the Ethyl Corporation is given each year by the local section for outstanding research contributions in the field of chemistry relate to the automotive industries. Later an endowment was established by the estate of the late Dr. George E. F. Brewer, a Midgley Medalist, that provides a cash prize given in addition to the medal. |

Minority Affairs |
Develops programs and activities that encourage and support minority participation in the chemical sciences; strives to promote the recognition of the professional accomplishments of minorities; serves to attract students from underrepresented or marginalized groups to the profession and identify inclusive educational institutions and businesses. |

National Chemistry Week/Chemists Celebrate Earth Day (NCW/CCEW) |
Plans activities and arranges events to highlight the importance of chemistry to the public during National Chemistry Week and Earth Day |

Port Huron Sub-Section Liaison |
Regional committee that coordinates activities around the Port Huron area. |
|
Project SEED |
Project SEED (Summer Experience for the Economic Disadvantaged) is a National ACS program, established in 1968, which promotes opportunities for economic disadvantaged high school students to work in college and university laboratories helping faculty members with research during the summer. |

Central Regional Meeting Planning (CERM June 2023) |
Ad hoc committee that plans and organizes the Central Regional Meeting (CERM) in advance of the section hosting. Since 2012, the section has been hosting CERM roughly every five years (2012, 2017 and 2023). Detroit also hosted CERM in 1974. |

Recognition |
The committee chair administers all awards activities, such as nominations for local, regional, and national ACS awards and special section awards. |
|
Senior Chemists Committee |
The Senior Chemists Committee’s (SCC) objectives are to improve communication among senior chemists, increase the number of senior chemists’ groups and the level of their engagement within local sections, and encourage the involvement of senior chemists in programs focused on K-12 education, undergraduate networking, and mentoring. |

Student Members |
Coordinates activities with ACS Student Chapters (formally Student Affiliates) in the local section. |

US National Chemistry Olympiad |
Coordinates the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad, a national competition for talented high school students, sponsored by the ACS. Education. Plans and implements activities to assist area precollege and college teachers, students, and student affiliate chapters, including scholarship programs, competitive examinations, science fairs, teacher/student nights, and journal subscriptions. |

Women Chemist Committee (WCC) |
Develops a stronger network for women, benefiting individual women chemists as well as the local community and chemical profession, making the local section more effective in serving its members. |

Younger Chemists Committee (YCC) |
Identifies the needs and concerns of younger chemists and develop programs responsive to their needs; facilitates professional networking among younger chemists; puts on free monthly Science Cafes, 3rd Tuesday of the month, 7pm |
